Temperature Sensor PCB Assembly Project for Argentina Customer

Article directory

Project Overview

We recently completed a temperature sensor PCB assembly project for a customer from Argentina. The customer designed the PCB layout and relied on our one-stop PCB manufacturing and assembly service for mass production. Thanks to our competitive pricing and reliable quality, the customer quickly placed a bulk order of 2,500 pieces last year. This year, they have returned with an order for 3,000 more units.

PCB Specifications

The board is a TG130 two-layer PCB with the following technical specifications:

  • Board thickness: 1.6mm
  • Surface finishing: Lead-free HASL
  • Copper thickness: 1oz
  • Material: FR4
  • Board size: 60mm × 40mm
  • Solder mask: Green
  • Silkscreen: White

The PCB design is simple with no difficult trace spacing or pad width issues. For production, we panelized the boards in sets of 3 using V-cut technology. After assembly, the boards were separated, edges polished, and carefully packaged before shipment.

BOM and Component Management

This project involved 15 types of components listed in the BOM. Since the BOM contained multiple corrections and notes, our team carefully verified each component’s package, value, part number, and accuracy requirements. For example, resistors required 1% tolerance instead of 5%.

After confirmation with the customer, we optimized some components to reduce costs, including connectors, diodes, capacitors, and resistors. By replacing certain connectors with alternative parts, the project achieved significant cost savings without compromising performance.

The PCB uses a single-sided assembly process with both SMD and DIP components. A critical design improvement was made for connector CN1, which was located at the edge of the board. Initially, its pads were too small compared to the pin size, leading to poor soldering quality. We recommended increasing the pad size by 1–2mm, which resulted in 100% reliable solder joints.

PCB Testing Process

Testing is one of the most important steps in PCB assembly services, ensuring functionality and reliability before shipment. The Argentina customer provided a detailed test procedure, which required a setup with four LEDs, one switch, and a 12V power supply. The testing sequence included:

  1. Power-On Test: Switch on the power; LED1 should light up immediately, followed by LED2 after 0.5 seconds.
  2. Temperature Response Test: Touch the sensor with a finger; once the temperature exceeds 30°C, LED3 and LED4 should light up.
  3. Cooling Response Test: Remove the finger; once the temperature drops below 26°C, LED3 and LED4 should turn off.

Initially, the results were inconsistent due to environmental temperature variations. After adjusting the test environment to ensure accurate thermal changes, all boards passed testing successfully. We thoroughly inspected all 2,500 PCBs before shipping them to the customer.

Application of Temperature Sensors

A temperature transducer is a sensor that detects temperature and converts it into a usable output signal. In this project, the touch sensor operates by thermal conduction or convection to achieve equilibrium, allowing the instrument to display accurate temperature readings.

Temperature sensors are widely used across various fields, including:

  • Industrial automation
  • Agriculture
  • Consumer electronics
  • Food and medical industries
  • Aerospace and defense applications
  • Petrochemical and metallurgy sectors

With the growing demand for smart electronics and IoT devices, temperature sensors play an increasingly critical role in modern PCB-based products.
