With the rapid development of society, science, and technology, smart home products are increasingly becoming part of our daily lives. Among them, the video intercom doorbell is an essential device for future residential security. This device helps eliminate potential risks by using video and voice communication to identify visitors and ensure home safety. Today, we are introducing a PCB assembly (PCBA) project for a video doorbell that reflects both technological innovation and high-quality PCB manufacturing.

PCB Specifications
The internal structure of the video doorbell mainly consists of a main board with an 8-connector wiring harness. The main board is a 2-layer PCB with the following specifications:
- Board thickness: 2.0mm
- Copper thickness: 2oz
- Surface finishing: Lead-free HASL
- Solder mask: Green with white silkscreen
- Material: FR4, TG130
- IPC Standard: Class 2

The PCB design includes common pad sizes, standard line widths, and spacing, making it relatively easy to produce. For mass production, we panelized the design into 2 boards per panel, with a 10mm edge and 4 fiducial marks. After assembly, the edges are trimmed off to achieve the final product dimensions. Importantly, there are no X-out boards in the panels, and the PCB manufacturing process follows conventional production standards.
Component Challenges and Solutions
One of the main challenges in this PCBA project was the use of 8 original brand DIP connectors, which are difficult to source in the open market. To solve this, we collaborated with a connector factory to customize the parts, with a minimum order quantity (MOQ) of 3,000 units. Our customer accepted this MOQ, aligning perfectly with their 3,000-unit order.
In addition, the assembly also required 8 female connectors with cables for the male connectors. Since lead times for the connectors were about 4–6 weeks, we first assembled the male connectors on the PCB boards, then worked with a supplier to produce the matching female connectors with cables. The supplier completed 3,000 units in about 3 days, after which we assembled the cables directly onto the connectors. Finally, the LCD screen was mounted onto the PCB with four screws to complete the unit.
Functions of the Video Doorbell
The assembled video intercom doorbell provides several smart functions for modern communities:
- Extension Management – Visitors can dial the indoor extension of a resident via the door host.
- Household Intercom – Residents can communicate with each other through the central system and door host.
- Convenient Call – The door machine can call the management machine, and the management unit can remotely open the door.
- Internal Communication – Secondary management machines at various entrances enable full internal communication within the community.
- Emergency Alarm – In emergencies, the community management center can initiate calls to each household via the central system.

Future of Video Doorbells
The development of the video intercom doorbell industry will continue to integrate advanced technology, user-friendly design, and consumer demand. A major trend is the integration of wireless technology and the Internet of Things (IoT), making video doorbells smarter, more accessible, and widely applicable. Many industry experts believe that the smart home market and the video intercom doorbell sector will grow as significantly as the smartphone industry.
