NFC (Near Field Communication) technology enables fast, secure, and energy-efficient wireless communication over short distances. It is widely used in access control systems, public transportation, and contactless payments. In this case study, we showcase a complete NFC PCB assembly and full-function testing project we completed for our client in Argentina. With a batch of 2,500 units, we handled everything from PCB manufacturing and component assembly to final testing and packaging—ensuring every board met strict performance standards.
Project Overview and PCB Specifications
Our Argentina-based client placed an order for 2,500 NFC printed circuit boards (PCBs). These were single-layer PCBs, manufactured with high-quality FR4 material. The boards featured a thickness of 1.0 mm, a TG rating of 140°C, and met the UL 94V-0 flame retardant standard. Surface finishing was done with lead-free HASL, and the copper thickness was 1 oz. The board size was 62 mm × 53 mm, featuring a green solder mask and white silkscreen. The PCB layout was simple, with no fine traces or pads, which streamlined the assembly process. Boards were panelized 4-up using a V-cut for easy separation after assembly.
Assembly Process and Key Component Considerations
The PCBs required double-sided assembly, consisting of five types of components listed in a detailed BOM (Bill of Materials) provided by the client. The components included both SMD and DIP types. A critical part of the assembly was the DIP component labeled JP1, located at the center of the board. Our client specified that JP1’s solder pads needed to be lower in height than the nearby IC to ensure a proper fit inside the product housing. If the solder joints were too thick, the board would not fit correctly.
To address this, the client’s engineer provided a special assembly guide emphasizing handling JP1 with extra care. Our team followed these instructions carefully, ensuring a clean and flush solder profile. We also paid close attention during the packaging stage to avoid damage to any protruding components and to maintain the integrity of the assembled boards.

Functional Testing for 100% Reliability
Thorough testing was a vital part of this project. Every single assembled PCB was tested for full NFC functionality. The primary testing method involved using a smartphone with the “NFC TagInfo by NXP” app, available on the Google Play Store. By placing the phone over the NFC antenna area of the PCB, we verified whether the signal was detected. If the device failed to respond, the likely culprits were a faulty capacitor, coil, or IC—each of which could disrupt the circuit.
The client provided a comprehensive testing PDF and three instructional videos. Although the client planned to send specialized NFC test equipment, tight deadlines prompted us to purchase our own NFC testing device to ensure all boards were checked promptly. This proactive approach enabled us to complete testing on time, and all 2,500 PCBs passed the functional test without issue.

Real-World Applications of the NFC Device
Our client’s NFC module is designed for wide application across multiple industries, including:
- Access Control & Ticketing – Enables secure authentication by bringing a tag or card close to a reader; ideal for transit systems and logistics.
- Contactless Payments – Facilitates secure transactions by placing the NFC-enabled device near a POS terminal.
- Device-to-Device Connectivity – Allows two NFC-equipped devices to exchange data like photos, music, or contact info.
- Smart Browsing – Connects phones with NFC posters or smart terminals to access real-time information.
- Remote Permission Management – Users can send commands via mobile networks to manage access rights for smart home or security systems.
