Introduction to the Project
The laser receiver system is a crucial part of modern precision agriculture, responsible for receiving laser signals and converting them into electrical signals for further processing. It typically consists of a receiving optical system, photodetector, and amplifier. Our recent collaboration involves a Canadian customer specializing in agricultural laser equipment since 2005. We supported the customer with the latest PCB design for a laser receiver used in farmland leveling systems.

PCBA Assembly Challenges and Solutions
This PCB is a double-sided assembly board containing 13 chips and over 55 types of components. During the initial review of the customer’s new design, our engineers identified critical issues:
Design Corrections
- Oversized Packages: Some chip packages exceeded pad sizes, making soldering impossible. After consulting with the client, the chip models were updated to match the pad layout.
- Component Spacing Issue: Two switches were placed too close together. We suggested replacing one with a DIP package to allow sufficient space and avoid mechanical interference.
Assembly Adjustments
- Precise Component Checks: The BOM had numerous handwritten changes and annotations. We carefully cross-checked package sizes, part numbers, and specifications to avoid any sourcing or placement errors.
- Soldering Optimization: Some edge components risked cold soldering due to small pads or oversized footprints. Our engineers modified these pads by enlarging them by 1–2mm, resulting in 100% reliable soldering.
- Strict Height Requirements: LEDs must be mounted at least 5mm above the PCB surface. Resistors must meet 1% tolerance (not 5%). Capacitor height was required to be exactly 8mm.

This laser receiver PCBA is integrated into advanced agricultural laser land leveling systems. These systems are widely used in countries like the U.S. and Canada to:

- Reduce irrigation runoff and soil erosion

- Laser Transmitter: Emits a reference plane
- Laser Receiver (our PCBA): Mounted on blade support rods
- Hydraulic Workstation: Adjusts blade elevation automatically
- Controller: Interprets laser signals and directs hydraulic operations
The laser receiver supports a detection range of up to 300mm and connects to the main controller via shielded cables.
